Challenging Thoughts for Challenging Times

Life is like school. Some of the courses are harder than others. But it is the body of knowledge learned that creates who we are and who we are meant to be. Many, many years ago I had a rare illness that caused severe chronic pain which I had to endure for several years. It was the first time in my life that I was confronted with a problem that had not been self-created. I had no power to fix or change it. Like any other illness – I hadn’t caused it and I couldn’t make it go away. I had to undergo major brain surgery to correct the problem. It was a dark time in my life and I did not see any good purpose or value to the experience. While we are going through traumatic experiences, it is difficult to have compassion for ourselves or to even be consciously aware of others.

Over the subsequent years, I was able to share with other people dealing with chronic pain about handling it one moment at a time. I had earned some compassion for others. But I never felt that this completely removed my nagging wondering – why did I have do go through this ordeal?

Then a couple of years ago, I met someone who had the same illness and I was able to share my experience, endurance and hope with her. I was open and the purpose was revealed. We may not see the value of an experience until years later but if we remain open to it – it will appear.

Even if your circumstances seem frightening or heartbreaking, there is an opportunity for you to grow your spirit into someone you have never been before. And it is absolutely possible to surmount any outside circumstance and find Grace and Strength within yourself.

Centered Action

You have within you the ability to surmount any hurdle. In the scheme of our development, it is only a blip – even if it seems like a huge blip right now. There is a lesson to be learned from every experience we go through. You just have to be honest with yourself and be willing to change if needed. Ask yourself: How can I learn from this experience? How can this experience benefit me or someone else? Keep your mind open and look for the Gift.

The real truth is, no matter what, you are magnificent and deserve a magnificent life.
