New Meditations
Challenging Thoughts for Challenging TimesWhat is your greatest fear? Afraid of spiders or snakes – well that’s easy enough to avoid. But what if your fear is stopping you from accomplishing your deepest desire? What if your fear is preventing you from becoming…? Then that is serious, and you may be enslaved to the fear.
Sometimes our fears stand in the way of our accomplishing our lofty goals. Sometimes they just stand in the way of our experiencing every day seemingly unimportant magic in our lives. We have the experience that we are drowning in our problems when we are consumed by a fear. We cannot see clearly our potential or our capabilities to surmount the fear. And we cannot see an endpoint or a way out. We have a want but we think the solution is either beyond our reach or someone out there has to fix it because we are too small. Fears block us from our inner Source of Ability.
There is always some payoff out of keeping the fear and staying stuck – even if it is not what our heart wants. You are keeping some old ideas about yourself for a reason. There is a lesson you are in the process of discovering. The funny thing about fears is that when we are able to clear away a fear from our thinking, the power to face the obstacle or challenge appears. It was within us all the time; we were just blinded to it.
Centered Action
Ask yourself why do you have this fear? What quality of life are you losing by keeping this fear? What are
you gaining by keeping it? What old idea or judgement would you have to give up about yourself or someone else in order to be rid of this fear?
Handle one fear at a time. And if you are not able or willing to let go of the ideas about yourself or others that are binding you to the fear, be compassionate with yourself. Just keep looking at it – or move on to another fear.
You will begin to see and accept yourself as you are; your mind will open to new options. Just because you have acted or thought this way for as long as you can remember, does not mean it has to stay that way. That is just part of the story we tell about ourselves. We are incredible, fluid beings; constantly changing. We have unbelievable potential for improvement. Sometimes the changes are imperceptibly slow. Sometimes the changes are magnificently rapid. They will always appear miraculously if we work for them.
