New Meditations
Challenging Thoughts for Challenging TimesMy mother says, in the most loving way, that when you have a child you are connected to them by an invisible cord, and you become a slave for life. What she means is that no matter how old they are, you are connected to them, care about them, and worry for them. My observation is that this is true no matter how a child comes into your life and is true of fathers as much as it is true of mothers.
Like other species, we are genetically hard-wired to take care of our young until they can care for themselves. It is a miracle of nature that to protect this little being a parent falls in love with this small child’s essence. Instinctively we want to care for and protect them. In the animal world, this adoration doesn’t last long. With humans, the bond continues throughout our lives and when our children have children, we fall in love with their essence as well. This is the magical and elusive bond of family.
A loving parent sees the best in us and wants the best for us. They gush with pride at our accomplishments. And they are heartbroken for us when we are struggling or hurt in any way. They forgive our missteps. A loving parent is not blinded to our faults; their view just accentuates the good in us as part of that unconditional love of our essence. They want to help and guide us to do better but they see the whole picture – good and bad and focus on the good in us. They see and want to see our very best.
Centered Action
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could see ourselves the way a loving parent looks at us? If we could see our shortcomings and where we need to improve, and kindly support ourselves to do better. Forgive ourselves for our mistakes. Then concentrate on our best traits – on what makes us the fabulous being we are – and support ourselves in doing and being more of that! Today let me see myself though loving eyes.
