Are Your Lists Running Your Life?

New Meditations

Challenging Thoughts for Challenging Times

We are a goal and list-oriented society.  If we have it on a list today – we better do it.  I believe that is because it gives us the illusion that we have control – over something.  We make a rule about what has to happen.  Invariably something or someone gets in the way and changes what we were expecting.  Then we are disappointed or upset with ourselves or others.  You may be saying “Where would I be if I didn’t set goals for myself and didn’t have a list of steps to get there?”

Don’t get me wrong.  I love lists and I need them.  If it’s on a list, I don’t have to think about it until I get to it.  And I get great satisfaction checking things off.  But things go south when my list is in charge of my day, which sometimes happens.  I get determined to get things done, despite all signs pointing in a different direction.

What would happen if you quieted your punishing self for changes or tasks not yet completed?  In the scheme of your life, it is not a big deal.  If you looked back a year ago can you even remember something you thought was serious and urgent on one of those lists?  We take things so very seriously instead of going with the flow.

When the goals and to-do lists become more important than the experience of our life, and with whom we are walking the path, we are really missing out.  We are missing out on connections with our important people – and sometimes with ourselves.

Centered Action

If something doesn’t go your way, take a breath and remind yourself, “There are no big deals” even if your head says, “yah but.”  Things may not go to your plan, but something can be learned.   You are not off course, just meandering in a different direction toward the same goal.

If you feel this message would be useful to someone you know, please forward it to them.
